Le Branford Marsalis Quartet annonce la sortie de son nouvel album - The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul - le 1er mars via OKeh et Marsalis Music. Le quartet mené depuis trois décennies par le saxophoniste légendaire Branford Marsalis a toujours été un modèle d'art sans concessions et audacieux, avec une identité collective profonde aux horizons musicaux toujours plus vastes. The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul voit le groupe atteindre de nouveaux sommets, répondant à une multitude d'ambiances avec une inspiration et une cohésion de groupe unique. Comme d'habitude, on retrouve les compositions des vétérans du quartet, Eric Revis fournissant par exemple le fracassant Dance of the Evil Toys ou encore le plus tendre mais tout aussi dynamique Nilaste, tandis que Joey Calderazzo renforce sa virtuosité avec Cianna et Conversation Among the Ruins. En plus du titre Life Filtering from the Water Flowers, composé par Marsalis et qui comprend l'un de ses solos de saxophone les plus profonds et nuancés, on retrouve sur l'album deux pépites jazz des seventies, plus exigeantes : Snake Hips Waltz de Andrew Hill et The Windup de Keith Jarrett. Immanquable!

Musicien parmi les plus prolifiques de la scène suédoise, comptant à son actif des collaborations avec des artistes aussi divers que José Gonzales, Eagle-Eye Cherry ou Lester Bowie, le trompettiste Goran Kajfes dirige une nébuleuse de groupes dont le Subtropic Arkestra. Dans The Reason Why, le Subtropic se fait un bonheur de revisiter à sa manière certains des innombrables grooves de l'Afrique, du Bénin à l'Ethiopie en passant par le Nigeria. Le répertoire se compose de titres obscurs, de perles secrètes et d'opus contemporains. Le choix s'est fait hors de toutes considération de styles ou de notoriété. Le Subtropic ne connaît pas les frontières continentales et se plaît à embarquer l'auditeur dans quelque échappée atmosphérique vers un ailleurs planant volontiers baigné des couleurs du psychédélisme des claviers vintage.
