Die Antwoord c'est un trio sud-africain qui fait du rap matiné d'electro. Armés d'une imagerie trash complètement hors du commun, ce groupe sait également faire de l'excellente musique. Entre rap énervé et refrain entêtant chanté par la caution féminine du groupe, Yo-Landi Visser, les Die Antwoord sont certains de faire parler d'eux. Aujourd'hui leur album $O$ sort chez Interscope (excusez du peu) et c'est dire le talent brut dont ces jeunes gens fait preuve. On est bien loin du « coup marketing » que certain dénoncent, et c'est une vraie déflagration sonore qui s'empare des enceintes à l'écoute de ce disque. Novateur, barré, attachant et avant tout extraordinaire, les Die Antwoord débarquent et secouent un paysage musical souvent trop mièvre !

Horace Silver tenait par-dessus tout à ses racines. C'est celles-ci qui embarquaient souvent son jeu incandescent dans des accents funky. Le pianiste n'oubliait jamais que son père, originaire du Cap-Vert, lui avait fait écouter d'autres musiques. Et ce disque (son meilleur ?) lui était dédicacé. Flanqué de Joe Henderson (saxophone ténor) avec Carmell Jones (trompette) en embuscade, le fougueux musicien s'en donne à coeur joie, multiplie les embardées, jubile et célèbre sans trop de manières un jazz fluide et immédiatement séduisant.

Voilà bientôt 20 que les finlandais de Kalmah distillent leur death metal mélodique. Ce 8ème album studio démontre que le nombre d’années n’a pas entamé la rage du combo de Swamplord. Souvent comparé à Children of Bodom ou Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Kalmah n’en reste pas moins un monstre prêt à tout pour protéger son royaume de la destruction de l'humanité... Cela donne un disque riche en batailles de riffs enflammés... après tout son titre « Palo » ne signifie-t-il pas « brûler » ?

Le succès de The Head On the Door a donné une grande liberté artistique au groupe de Robert Smith qui en profite en enregistrant ce double album, ambitieux, réussi et (une fois de plus) immensément populaire. Plaire avec le même disque aux esthètes européen et au grand public américain (n°35 du classement du Billboard) : que rêver de mieux ? The Cure est alors sur un nuage, tout ce qu'il touche se transforme en or. Ce « nouveau » groupe en est vraiment un : ses membres cosignent pour la première fois toutes les musiques (Smith se réserve toujours les textes), ils s'amusent ensemble et ça s'entend. Cet album de 18 titres, riche et chatoyant, enregistré en France dans une certaine sérénité, est une réussite artistique et commerciale (n°6 en Angleterre), à l'image de ses singles les plus connus, « Why Can't I Be You ? » et « Just Like Heaven » (le premier du groupe à se classer dans le fameux Top 40 du Billboard, à la 40ème position). Ce dernier titre magnifique, réussissant l'exploit pop ultime d'être à la fois triste et entraînant, est l'un des plus populaires du groupe en France, puisque sa version instrumentale (enregistrée un an avant l'album) était à l'époque l'indicatif du générique de la fameuse émission télévisée Les Enfants du rock.

The Orb revient avec un nouvel album pour Kompakt 10 ans après le facétieux Okie Dokie It's The Orb On Kompakt. Ce disque est une nouvelle oeuvre majeure psychdélique du duo anglo-allemand avec ses basses puissantes, ses boucles obscures, ses textures ambient profondes et ses synthés psychédéliques. Le légendaire duo constitué d'Alex Paterson et Thomas Fehlmann est au sommet de sa créativité sur ces 4 nouveaux titres entre mélodies accrocheuses et ambiances cinématiques.

Sorti en 1977 sous l'excellent label « Lumiar discos » (du regretté Almir Chediak, producteur des fameux « songbooks » qui réunirent la crème de la musique brésilienne)... et un peu oublié depuis, cette compilation d'enregistrements est assez rare et exceptionnelle. Le grand compositeur Tom Jobim - alors au faîte de la gloire et de la reconnaissance internationale, (c'est tout de même lui l'inventeur de la Bossa-Nova) - redevient, le temps d'un disque, un modeste et génial interprète. En reprenant les grands thèmes d'Ary Barroso, de Noel Rosa, d'Edu Lobo, de Dorival Caymmi et de Carlos Lyra, il fait « chanter son âme »... Comme jamais. Bien entendu, les whiskies et la poésie de Vinicius de Moraes n'y sont pas pour rien. Dailleurs, ils sont à portée de main et de lèvres. Le génie fait le reste...Pour principal, c'est lui, Tom, autrement dit Antonio Carlos, faisant chanter, pleurer et rire l'essence la plus raffinée de la musique et de la poésie brésilienne. La qualité orchestrale y atteint des sommets... Et les copains sont là, aussi, pour des duos d'exception et mémorables : Gal Costa, Chico Buarque, Edu Lobo. On notera - et c'est un minimum d'ironie pour l'auteur de « Samba de uma nota só » -on notera donc, sa voix de basse, son piano discret, son tempo ralenti... toujours ralenti...Avec lui, la musique n'est pas pressée. Forcément : Ce n'est pas un citron. A bon entendeur, le salut est donc là : à portée d'oreille. En 14 chansons, interprétées en mains et en voix de maître.

Après le succès de son album Les cinq saisons, Nemanja Radulović nous présente son nouveau disque consacré à Paganini, avec pour souhait de changer l'image du compositeur et montrer qu'il n'est pas seulement le compositeur de la virtuosité. Car si Paganini doit sa réputation à sa technique instrumentale inégalée, Nemanja Radulović voit aussi, à travers cette musique, un compositeur qui a permis aux violonistes de se sentir plus proches de la voix humaine. Le programme du disque a été concocté par Nemanja lui-même. Il a enregistré les Caprices numéros 5, 11 et 24, ceux qui lui ont laissé le plus d'impressions en concert, mais aussi pendant ses études et les concours, le Concerto n°1 avec l'Orchestre de la Raï, dans lequel Nemanja a particulièrement ressenti cette proximité entre violon et voix humaine. Il a par ailleurs sélectionné la Sonate n°12 et Moses Fantasy, la célèbre Variation sur la Corde de Sol, enregistrée avec la pianiste Laure Favre-Khan et son ensemble à cordes Les Trilles du Diable, sur un arrangement du compositeur Aleksandar Sedlar.

Les rythmes hypnotiques des Tambours du Burundi sont devenus célèbres grâce à leur collaboration avec Adam & The Ants et Bow Wow Wow. Ce disque plein de puissance est un billet aller simple pour le continent africain.

En pleine période punk, Elvis sort un ovni, Costello surclasse tout le monde, un disque fondateur indispensable.

Pour son nouvel album, la légende de la soul William Bell revient sur le label de ses débuts. Célèbre pour avoir composé et interprété de véritables classiques de la soul comme You Don’t Miss Your Water ou Private Number, William Bell a co-écrit avec John Leventhal, également producteur de l’album, la plupart des chansons de This Is Where I Live. Marc Cohn, Rosanne Cash, Cory Chisel et Scott Bomar ont eux aussi participé à l’écriture de ce disque. Sur cet album, William Bell fait preuve d’une remarquable sagacité qui dans l’interprétation se traduit par de l’assurance et de la subtilité frôlant une certaine tension.

Ce disque a été produit par Glyn Johns. C'est la première fois que Johns dirigeait seul un enregistrement des Who; auparavant, il n'était que producteur associé. L'enregistrement eut lieu aux studios Shepperton Sound Stage avec l'assistance du studio mobile de Ronnie Lane durant les mois d'avril et mai 1975. Le tout commença par une séance d'improvisation le 4 avril, continua en mai, et les overdubs furent rajoutés en juin. Le mixage fut effectué aux studios Island, Notting Hill, Londres, durant les mois de juillet et d'août. Pete Townshend souffrait du syndrome de la page blanche au moment de l'écriture de The Who By Numbers. Il a dit plus tard que pratiquement tout ce qu'il avait écrit à l'époque s'était retrouvé sur l'album mis à part une poignée de chansons, ce qui contraste avec le projet Lifehouse et Quadrophenia où l'auteur s'était montré très prolifique. Le disque est plus souvent connu pour être le plus « sombre » et personnel écrit par le guitariste Pete Townshend. Il est certain que les thématiques dominantes sont particulièrement déprimantes. Presque toutes les chansons de l'album présentent une vision de l'existence particulièrement désabusée, voire morbide à certains moments. However Much I Booze et They Are All in Love sont des exemples de cette ambiance désespérée. Il faut rappeler que Pete Townshend s'est toujours inspiré de ses tourments intérieurs dans son écriture, toujours avec une certaine forme d'honnêteté, comme dans My Generation ou Pictures of Lily. Ici, le contexte personnel de Pete Townshend était assez défavorable. La musique de ce disque est assez différente des albums précédents, bien que se plaçant dans la lignée du style des Who. Les synthétiseurs ont pratiquement disparu (ils reviendront en force dans l'album suivant, Who Are You); les compositions sont bien moins complexes que celles de Quadrophenia. Cependant, on retrouve plusieurs marques de fabrique des Who : virtuosité de la section rythmique (John Entwistle en particulier), mélange de guitares acoustiques et électriques, harmonies vocales, le tout joué avec une énergie particulière.

Dix années séparent Ten Shades Of Blues, le nouvel album de Richard Bona qui paraît cet automne, de Scenes From My Life, son premier projet en 1999. Une décennie dans le cas du bassiste et chanteur camerounais, cela ne se résume pas en quelques lignes tant le personnage semble se démultiplier, poussé par une curiosité et une envie de jouer permanentes. Des traits de caractère au coeur de son dernier enregistrement en date, consacré au blues, à ses notes-clés reconnaissables dans toutes les cultures. D'où ce nouveau disque ouvert sur de multiples rencontres, avec Richard Bona pour guide aux côtés de musiciens indiens, country, jazz, croisés au fil de ses voyages aux quatre coins du monde...

Véritable événement à sa sortie en 2004, le premier album solo de Gwen Stefani « Love.Angel.Music.Baby » a été une des plus grosses ventes mondiales de 2005 (plus de 7 millions d'albums vendus dans le monde, dont près de 200 000 ex en France, double disque d'or). Suite à ce succès, Gwen a sorti sa marque de vêtements LAMB, entamé une grande tournée US, fait un bébé et enregistré un deuxième album solo. Pour ce nouvel opus, intitulé « The Sweet Escape », Gwen a collaboré avec plusieurs grands noms : Akon, Pharell Williams, Tony Kanal (de No Doubt), Nellee Hooper (Madonna.), Dallas Austin niveau production, Linda Perry (Kylie, Christina Aguilera, Pink.), Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) et Time Rice-Oxley (de Keane) pour ce qui est de l'écriture. Au final, « The Sweet Escape » est la suite logique de L.A.M.B. avec une série de titres dance aux sonorités 80's et des morceaux urbains, à l'image du 1er extrait « Win It Up ! » (produit par Pharell Williams). Ce titre, directement rentré en forte rotation sur NRJ, reprend un sample du thème de « La Mélodie Du Bonheur » ('The Sound Of Music'). Réalisée par Robert Wise (West Side Story), cette célèbre comédie musicale avec Julie Andrew et Christopher Plummer a séduit toute une génération et raflé 5 oscars en 1965 : meilleur film, meilleur réalisateur, meilleur son, meilleur montage, meilleur arrangement musical.

Tony Allen vient de réaliser un rêve d'enfant. Il assure même qu'avec The Source, douzième opus de sa discographie, il a enregistré le disque de sa vie. Il n'est pas anodin qu'un musicien de 76 ans dont la carrière s'étale sur plus de 50 ans et dénombre des centaines d'enregistrements en studio, fasse un tel aveu Premier album du batteur nigérian pour le prestigieux label Blue Note, The Source symbolise peut être mieux qu'aucune autre référence du catalogue à la fois l'âge classique du label et son présent innovant. L'enregistrement de l'album s'est fait sur bandes analogiques et autour de Tony sont réunis quelques-uns des meilleurs musiciens d'une scène que l'on peine à étiqueter jazz tant elle se caractérise avant tout par sa mobilité et sa créativité. Au total 11 pointures, dont 5 cuivres, ont participé à l'enregistrement de The Source. Plus un guest de marque, Damon Albarn. Les meilleurs albums nous racontent toujours une histoire. Celui-ci nous fait remonter à la source de l'art musical de Tony Allen, autrement dit le Nigéria de la seconde moitié du 20ème siècle ou Tony Odalipo Allen, écoute des disques de ses maîtres américains, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Kenny Clarke, éminents batteurs de l'ère du Be Bop et du Hard Bop. Dans ce contexte particulier, le mot source prend une valeur polysémique. Car ici, il peut s'agir d'un retour au source comme de la mise en relation avec une source sonore . Cette dimension est cruciale tant cet album brille par la variété de ses timbres et la diversité de ses couleurs.

Trompettiste virtuose très spectaculaire, au jeu énergique et très contrasté, Lee Morgan a déjà roulé sa bosse avec les plus grands (Horace Silver, Dizzy Gillespie puis les Jazz Messengers à partir de 1958) lorsqu’il enregistre avec Joe Henderson et Barry Harris ce qui reste aujourd’hui comme son meilleur disque, ce spectaculaire et étincelant Sidewinder. Notre homme ne profitera malheureusement pas longtemps de sa popularité et tombera en 1972 sous les balles d’une femme jalouse...

Le tango façon Galliano c'est indéfinissable. Outre la maîtrise technique de galliano par laquelle il nous transmet l'émotion, il faut retenir sa vraie capacité à ré-adapter les standarts du jazz. Il impose avec brio son attachement à ce genre et donc à la relecture. Puissant, expressif, parfois enjoué par le jeu d'une valse endiablée, cet album contient tout pour célébrer la vie et l'attachement à la musique. Le premier morceau de cet album est, finalement, incontournable. Des morceaux superbes, un tango mis au 'goût du jour' sans pour autant en trahir l'esprit, un Galliano au top, bref tout ce qu'il faut pour faire un très bon disque où l'émotion est au rendez-vous...
